Chapter 10: "This Was a Crime"

  1. Is selling cheap coal to transcend poverty in largely populated countries like China and India a just cause, or is there a more environmentally-friendly way to help these people?
  2. How is down-playing the seriousness of global warming during the Bush administration affecting our society today?
  3. If Obama launched the Green Apollo program, " a crash program in rich and poor countries to jump-start the transition to an economy that is both climate-friendly and resilient", or a different program with similar intensions, how effective would this be? What could Obama do/say to make it more appealing to other countries?

  1. 1. I believe that there is a better way to help the impoverished than just selling cheap coal. It has been proven that green initiatives stimulate jobs and better the economy, thus I think these people don't have to rely on selling cheap coal.

    2. I think that by down-playing global warming for all those years hurt us for two main reasons: (1) it made our situation worse by increasing our usage of fossil fuels and (2) it put us even farther behind in the effort to combat global warming.

    3. I think that if the Unites States, as one of the most powerful countries in the world, took a serious effort against climate change, other countries would either be forced or would choose to follow. I think Obama has brought a new face to this country and that he has a major opportunity here to really take the next step in our fight against climate change.
