Chapter 7: In Vino Veritas (The Business of Climate Adaptation)

  1. If you were a CEO of a big company, would you invest money into preventing climate change now or later? Why?
  2. Explain the significance of the Roman saying "In Vino Veritas", "In Wine there is Truth". Do you see the "truth" happening in other places too?
  3. Like the discovery of Ice Man, do you think global warming will benefit the future in anyway? Will it help us advance in technology and live a healthier lifestyle?

  1. 1. If I was a CEO of a big company, I would obviously invest money into preventing climate change, especially after reading this chapter. However, I do understand where some CEOs are coming from. If they don't feel like they are being immediately or directly targeted, why would they change?

    2. "In Vino Veritas" or "In Wine there is Truth" is significant because the wine industry is actually one of the most vulnerable when it comes to climate change. Only a small temperature increase can dramatically effect an entire crop of wine. I would have to say that I also see the "truth" when it comes to food prices in general. They are becoming increasingly expensive due to failed crops and farther travel.

    3. I think that the threat or fear of global warming may help us move forward with our technology and encourage people to live more sustainable lives. However, I do not think any effects of global warming (sea level rise, increased smog, species extinction) will be beneficial.

  2. I think that after this year of record storms, flooding, heat waves and drought, we have all felt the truth of global warming. The stronger and more dramatic shifts of the weather as the Earth finds new climatic patterns have cost us both in lives and in billions of dollars. Climate change has affected every single person in the United States this year - I think people have already started to pay attention.

  4. 1.If I was a CEO of a any company, I would invest money into preventing climate changes now.It is unfortunate that some companies "that grow our food, deliver our water, produce electricity, construct roads and buildings..." are not realizing these necessities right away. Natural disasters are a part of life, and I would like to invest in protecting my company once not every time a disaster comes. If I were to invest money every time a disaster disrupts my company, I would not be only wasting money but time too. I understand some people may not be willing to change and invest a lot of money on trying to prevent a problem that is invisible; however, climate change is a real problem in today's society. Companies must invest and become a role model to their society.

2.In the statement "In Vino Veritas" or "In Wine there is Truth", it depicts a perfect example of how badly the earth is being affected by climate changes. In order to make wine, temperature is very important because it affects the taste of the wine. Even the smallest changes in temperature from the climate change destroy the wine industry. It is sad how this climate change will affect other industries in the near future as well. The water industry is also affected by the climate changes that make parts of the earth very dry. There are said to be possible water shortages from the high temperatures and dry climates according to ETF trends.

3.I believe everything happens for a reason. One person said to me that things around you, depending on how you use them, can be poison or medicine. If you try to look at global warming from an optimistic and a positive point of view, discoveries like the Ice Man could be made. I agree with MK that the effects of global warming are not beneficial, but I think the threat and experience of global warming might help us live a more sustainable life in the future. After confronting the fears of global warming/climate change, a period of realization will occur, a realization that helps people live healthier lifestyles.
